I was thinking about this: stereotyping can be funny when its "harmless" I mean sure it was pretty awful but eg Allo Allo or Hogan's Heroes. But stereotypes that repeatedly cast different culture as dishonest, stupid, or whatever is another story.

More like it might be funny and pleasant if eg there are stereotypical characters that tend to be found in a culture (like eg a Kiwi Farmer dude obsessed with his herd's fertility, or the Samoan Granma with a religious fixation ???) and it might only be people within that culture that can get them right.

but if theyre using it as an excuse to then go slagging off wholesale at others like Asian or Indians thats just mean-spirited

And I will say again "I havent seen this program !!!"

Go watch it then, it's funny and only as harmful as some other great cartoons like the PJs, Southpark or Family Guy. I like the local angle which is especially funny for NZ'ers.

It was funded by the Labour Party!

Look at Helen Clarks teeth!!!! They are not white and straight in real life!!!!! (Robert Rakete's hair was real though, hehe)

A question I ponder is: If this show was made by white people, would it have made it to tv?

I think not.

Unless it made fun of skinheads....maybe the chch vorbers might be able to make one....

Thats a problem with the writing not the concept, as a concept it would work well IMO.

I was told the idea came in a part from Porirua (where i live). if this is true they did a pretty good realistic show of it. The truth is that most Maori's and PI's (around here and with kids at least) are frequently are racist about themselves and go around calling them selves and each other nigger and as i regularly hear saying "oh wotta black cunzor" if some one steals something. It shouldn't really be on tv but it's happening and if it's getting good ratings it'll stay

I saw it last night and thought it was pretty funny, certainly wasn't the funniest thing I've seen, but parts of it were hilarious.

Not sure about this racism thing. BroTown is rather un-PC and I am quite surprised that such an un-PC show has made it's way to prime time TV. Most of it's gags are based around making fun of stereotypes, but I don't think they're harmful. I can't really come up with an argument to back that up, but that's what I'm thinking :eh:

I think the problem I have is that, in the current NZ climate where racism is a huge problem (flowing in all directions, mind you) that I just really don't think a show with racist themes is going to be particularly helpful.
