Xt Brake Pad Bolts For Slx ?

Postby beater32 on Tue 3/Mar/15 12:29pm

I'm sure I read on here somewhere that the crappy split pins on the Slx brakes can be changed out for bolts. If so any idea on where I could get some ? I'm bloody sick of the pad rattle..

I'd rather have rattle than the bolts backing out and vanishing mid-ride (which is what I've had with xtr - the pathetically weak circlip that's meant to prevent this also vanished)

a lot of the rattle is the pad moving around in the caliper (and against the bolt/split pin) anyway, and given all the other things that rattle on a bike I can't say it's something that bugs me

One of those bolts coming out is major operator error, you must have not even finger tightened it up . I've used xts/saints sans the circlip and have never had one come undone. There is no real force on them in actual use that would even come close to being able to undo a properly done up bolt.

Yeah you can buy them for a couple of bucks. AFAIK XT and SLX are identical except for XT coming with the pad bolts and having a bling chrome cover on the reservoir. (Of course, someone will be along shortly to prove me wrong...)

I've done exactly that with my slx calipers. works beautifully. any lbs that does shimano parts can get them.

add to the above ^ one seeming useless adjustment screw on the XT lever. blanked off on the SLX part.

Split pins weigh less. :hmmm:

I use splits on my XTRs. Cut a little off the ends of the pin too. Unsprung weight is the enemy. The pad rattle makes for a talking point too, at which point I can display my superior attention to detail for the purpose of performance.

Like that time I noticed your caliper bolts had wound their way out and you had sweet floating calipers ;)

I don't believe in locktite. Maybe if it weighed less...

If it's the pins I'm thinking of, pop into a hobby shop and try different thickness of RC car body pins. Some slightly thicker ones may be a bit more snug(and not rattle)
