That was hard. So different than running round a football field. Think I could get a couple of minutes of that time when I get used to running in the hills.
Don't think I'll be doing any of the circuits for quite a while. Just don't have time to do any long rides like that.

Right, got that in Noel ;)
It was hard? Well it's supposed to be hard  :satan:
Hope you get around to the road leg, to complete the three. I've been thinking about updating my road time, it's a bit overdue...

OK, I've changed the look of this leaderboard a little bit, by sticking the data into the official leaderboard engine (previously it was just sorted it by eye). This means it's sorted 'properly' for those doing less than all the times and it also gives you the estimate table FWIW ;)

Well done for completing the three

Looking at these times I should be able to knock a few mins off my road time, and that would get all 3 times pretty close, at a stretch I might even be able to get my road time the quickest of the three (mainly because of my weak run time and my mtb is not being a competitive climber)

The grimness of Chch winters made me go against all my believes and slip the old running shoes on (for the 4th time in 7 years)

An incredibly uninspiring 21.30. I thought I'd easily go sub 20 and likely beat my mtb time but not even close :( I even got beaten by a miniture schnauzer, shame.

After the climb headed along the traverse and then down bowenvale. Was very disappointing to see some downhillers riding vic park, pack of retards everyone of them.

Run: 21.30
Mtb: 19. 10 (from earlier this year)

Nice one Nicko!

You do realise that there is now the compulsory road leg time :sly:

Wanna borrow my skinny wheeled beast? Mind you, you'd probably be able to do the road leg on knobblies and still beat my time

Please don't think this weather is typical and move back north because of it
This prolonged miserable dullness is very untypical of Canterbury winters. A crisp frosty start to the day followed by glorious sunshine is what we normally have so hopefully things will change soon and you can put your running shoes back in the cupboard.

I'll hopefully have my new cross bike up and running by the weekend so will give the road climb a nudge to finsh off the tripple.

Just reading through the rest of the thread, what was decided as the fasted run route?

The fastest route I took was straight up the valley floor track, across the concrete bridge and then hung a hard right up the steep walking track, then 30m later hung a left and straight lined (mostly via a track) up to the lower skidder site. From there I ran up the main 4WD track all the way to the main skidder site, then straight up the 4WD track to the fence (the same fence the see-saw goes over), jumped the fence and followed a goat track that staight lined the last 30m or so to the Summit Rd. I tried a slightly shorter route the first time but it was mostly off track and the tussocks and long grass were much slower than I was anticipating.

Cheers xcguy. Is that the map your ride route which you posted earlier in the thread?

Must try the run again soon, although would need to sort out some kind of lights as I don't think my iblasts are very practical for running. Any recommendations?

Right Nick, you're on the board, look forward to the roadie time ;)

Like XCguy said, don't be dis-heartened - chch winters are normally much drier/brighter than this - this is almost like a UK winter which is unthinkable :butbut:

talk to eric@nl - there is a headband kit for the iblasst (old mount version that used dual-lock) - it's not on the site, but it does work quite well. If you've got the new mount I think you're out of luck though

otherwise - dealextreme jobbie (cheap and cheerful), ayups with headband kit (lightest option - but spendy), bdel's top mountaineering headtorch (icon) which is as light as the ayups, but half the price and half the output (but still okay as long as you're running solo)

No that was the mostly off-track route I did the first time round. It's shorter but not as fast as I had hoped.

Thought it would be good fun to have a go at sharpening up my times on this over summer.

Snuck out for a little run and got up in 23.08. No improvement over pb, but not too far off considering - keen to try to get under 20 min.

Came back down Old Bowenvale. Top 2/3 pretty dry and in ok condition. Bottom 1/3 still has some pretty muddy patches and some interesting new 'features' .

There is a volunteer track maintenance session up there this Sunday morning so lots of that should get sorted if a few bods turn up.

I think you'll easily be able to get under 20 min for the run
If my knees still worked I'd join you and push you to do a sub 18 :sly:
