Bike Polo Wellington

Postby the-right-to-evolve on Mon 6/Jul/09 9:47am

anyone interested?

you need a bike.

singlespeeds preferably must have a least one brake if your riding a fixed gear we dont mind brakeless.

we can build a mallet for you if you want to play.

suggestions of times and location as we've already played a few times at different schools and st pats is the best if you dont mind jumping the fence. :D

probably weekends.

i think wellington could work if you can think of a good playing area.

i play on a fully rigid fixed gear brakeless with 2 different sized wheels so its really up to you.

i would suggest clipless as you look like an idiot falling over sideways still attached to the bike. :D

protections not really to necessary we play with a tennis ball to reduce injuries and if we follow American rules of contact....

mallet to mallet, bike to bike, and body to body we should be fine so long as your not a mad axeman that enjoys hitting people with a mallet :satan: .

the more the merrier.

im looking into stronger materials for mallets as i snapped mine last week and need a new one.

if you could spread the word to your friends who bike and stuff it would be cool we need at least 6 people for one game and it'd be good to see a few teams.

whats the mallet like ? materials ?
i'm presuming like croquet ?
can you post a pic.

heaps of schools down here. tennis court is what you are looking at ? and was that 3 aside, or 6 aside ?

and i think you mean flats are best - clipless (ie spd's)are what stick your feet to the pedals bro.

you might find they are a tad heavy but everything's worth trying.

im going to try put together a decent one from a ski pole and thick plastic pipe this week.

goalies on a bike yep.

if we play 3 games with 3 a side everybody gets a go in goal.

sounds sweet ill be waiting to hear from you.

actually, I can probably scrounge up 4 people. If it's in wellington central somewhere. We'd need to get the mallets made, do you have a guide, or would you make some for a fee?

stuff needed

pvc pipe any size ( obviously not gutter size but you know what i mean)
drill
bolt and nut long enough to fit through pvc pipe
electrical tape/hockey tape/bike grip/bar tape
ski pole
hacksaw/pipe bender
files
drill bit big enough for bolt
larger drill bit if you want speed holes

Image

ok your going to wanna start by cutting the pole just above that thing......

Image

well done give yourself a pat on the back.....

next whip out your manly drill and drill a hole in the center of the pvc pipe

(you can use a pen to mark or just make a guesstimation)

Image

through both sides

Image

then insert your pole (hehe) into the hole you just drilled (hehe)

Image

now if you have good eyesight you should be able to drill another center hole except this time on the side so it goes through the pvc and the pole.

Image

then put the bolt through the pipe through the ski pole and back out of the pipe like so.....

(sorry about the picture)

Image

trim any excess bolt that may stick through

now its simply a case of wrapping the grip this is pretty self explanatory and im sure your all capable of this.

if there is an existing ski grip chop it off as they're really uncomfortable for polo.

oh and then you can colour your pole or put on stickers or make a fancy carrying attachment like i did make sure that bolts nice and tight. oh and for the love of god put a bar plug in the top of the pole i dont want any core samples of people rolling across the court.

and speed holes are like so......

Image

these are for weaklings that cant lift a small piece of pvc

dont do that it makes it snap easy you have been warned

sweet
