but not sure if I should replace the cassette at the same time. It's only 9 months old (new on a Scale 35) so I assume it's still in pretty good nick. How do I tell ? and which of these would be the better chain. All the componentry on my horse is shimano so I assume the cassette is.

Cheers :)

same link? and how worn is the chain?

Chain is in about 6 pieces, along with my chain breaker (hence 7 1/4 hrs in a support car instead of completing the Rainbow  )

This saves mashing the castellations, the tool and your knuckles.

So, removed the cranks, then tried to remove the BB. Wow, that puppy was tight. Used this method to bolt the BB-tool to the BB and then applied some angry to it. Nothing. Next step was to put the BB-tool, with bike attached, into my bench vice, lock the bastard in, and use the bike to lever the BB out. No dice - nearly ripped the vice off the bench tho!

So, I doubt I'm ever going to get it out of there without a hacksaw. However, once reassembled and taken for a ride, the creak/groan is gone. Fancy that. :paranoid:

You know a BB has one left threaded side, right?

Both the XTR/DuraAce and Sram PC-991 are top quality chains.
The Sram comes with the Powerlink connector. Very handy if you regularly like to take your chain off your bike to clean.

Try running 2 chains, cleaning and alternating them. Your drive train will last a lot longer.

You WILL need a new cassette...and possibly front middle and small rings too.

Ha, I should add "in good condition" and not bent like a banana.

Mate. I'm not questioning your judgement as I'm more than happy get a new cassette and rings. Just want to know your reasoning for future reference. Cheers :)

Nine months is easily long enough to have worn a drivetrain out, and by the sounds of your chain it was! Fitting a new chain on worn cogs is usually a recipe for slipping gears, as the new chain fails to mesh with the worn down cogs and jumps under load.
