Shimano clutch failures. A big deal or no in the XT 786 series?

what's failed?

you can get replacement kits for them, i keep a collection of wrecked ones for the B-knuckle links and clutch units if you only need one specific part.

the "loop" that houses the cam that engages the one-way bearing is a known weak point, if you turn the clutch on and it does nothing: it's usually either the loop has broken or the clutch just needs adjusting.

I broke the one in my Zee. Part number is the same I think. Well I think it wore out rather than broke.

I broke the one in my 786, but had probably over tightened it to be fair.. $30 replacement, and the replacement lasted fine for another three years so far.

Clutch derailleurs turn noisy old bikes into smooth sounding old bikes. One of the best things ever I reckon.

If you want quiet go sram. Shimano stuff is less effective at stopping chain flappage. If you want to go for 3 months without a warranty claim on your derailleur or shifter without spending big money then shimano is a much better option :paranoid:

Clutch derailleurs also ruin your suspension responsiveness.

Chainless isn't the solution for every ride.
