Bicycle Assembly Station At Christchurch Airport

Postby Tama on Fri 3/Jul/09 2:59pm

I'm killing some time while waiting for my JetStar flight to depart so I thought I'd post up this photo I snapped going into the airport.

As you can see some thoughtful person has set up an area with two bike racks and signage so people fresh off planes can assemble their bikes.

HOW FREAKING COOL IS THAT!?

Not only did someone think of it but they then pushed it through corporate bureaucracy, got some funds and made it happen.

Having put bikes together in airports (in the cold, on the footpathI) appreciate the gesture and think it's jolly good that proactive bicycle friendly stuff like this is happening

I haven't seen it 'in use' but have gone past and seen a small stack of bike boxes nearby, so they do get used. I guess not a lot of people who travel with bikes also ride to their hotel tho..

What a good idea. Ive flew with my bikes a few times, built them up and ridden off.

Sure beats trying to catch public transport or a taxi with a bike.

On my lunchtime walks i often spot jetlagged cyclists fresh off the Singapore flight attempting to put their bikes together.. They are used quite a lot...
Can you imagine 10 hour flight then you have to put your bike together :(

Hmmm...never seen it myself....but then i'm normally met by the driver, and ushered away pretty quickly. Have to keep an eye out next time I'm there.

The other day when I went past one of the racks had an old tenspeed hanging on it, minus it's seat and front wheel. :D
