About time this silly policy was changed.

Bicycles will be allowed on Wellington trains for free from July 1 in a bid to encourage people to use public transport.

At present cyclists pay the price of an adult fare, up to a maximum of $4, to take their bikes on the train.

Peter Glensor, the chairman of Greater Wellington regional council's transport and access committee, said a survey of cyclists found they were discouraged from using trains because of the extra charge for a bike.

If there was no space on the train, however, bikes would not be allowed.

The council would also investigate equipping the new Wairarapa trains with upright racks or hooks in the roof, to better transport bikes.
