New Zealand BMX Pair Prepare For UCI Supercross

Kiwi World No1s Marc Willers and Sarah Walker will complete final preparations today ahead of the next round of the UCI BMX Supercross in Copenhagen this weekend.

Willers (Cambridge) and Walker (Kawerau) have completed an intensive training camp with national coach Ken Cools in Switzerland ahead of the two-day competition tomorrow and Sunday.

It is the third round of a five-round circuit for the men and the second of three rounds for the women, with this round and the upcoming world championships in China the two main international competitions before the Beijing Olympics.

Willers was second in the opening round of the Supercross in Madrid but crashed out on the treacherous Adelaide track, after riders went down in front of him in both motos although he still holds his world no 1 ranking.

Walker won the Adelaide round after a superb overtaking manoeuvre in the final and will be looking to cement not only her top world ranking but the lead in the Supercross this weekend.

BikeNZ national coach Ken Cools is delighted with the training, much of it based at the UCI World Cycling Centre in Switzerland.

"I couldn’t be happier with what we have accomplished in training and the effort that these two put out was incredible,” Cools said. “It’s a pleasure for me to be able to have two athletes like these guys."

He is less than certain about the track preparation for tomorrow’s Supercross.

"I don’t know how it’s going to turn out. When we were there yesterday they were far from done and the dirt that they used was really sandy, so I don’t know how it’s going pack down enough for the race."

"The layout is pretty cool. It’s going to be fast and technical, exactly what you would think a Supercross track should be like."
