Clapp, Drower podium in North Canterbury Round Three (Final round).
New Zealand Community Trust South Island Cross Country Cup, 20 January 2008, Omihi

Brenda Clapp (Nelson) put in a great performance to win the Elite Women’s field on the technical, purpose-built Vulcaniser mountain bike track in Omihi, North Canterbury this weekend. Sitting in third place in the series rankings prior to the race start, her win took her to second place overall in the South Island Cross Country Cup. Cathy Hamer (Hokitika), second in the blustery conditions on the day, took the overall series title from Jeanette Gerrie (Christchurch), who was third.

The Elite men’s race also proved exciting with the winner of Round Two, Eric Drower (Cambridge), finally pulling away from Dayle McLauchlan (Christchurch) in the fourth of six laps to take the race. McLauchlan won the overall series placing from another consistent South Island Cup performer Tim Madgwick (Christchurch), with Jon Richardson (Dunedin) taking third place.

In the U19 Mens race, George Bennett (Christchurch) rode well to beat his North Island rival Ashley Hough (Tauranga) in the race, with Hough taking the overall series title from Joshua Wright (Alexandra).

Other fine performances of the day included Jeremy Inglis (Senior Men – Hanmer Springs) Henry Sommerville (U23 Men – Christchurch), Logan Horn (U17 Men – Christchurch), Anton Cooper (U15 Men – Christchurch) and Craig Phillips (Master 40+ Men – Christchurch). All won their respective races, also taking out first place in the South Island Cup series in their categories.

The riders will now make their way north in preparation for the North Island Cup, which begin in Opotiki, Sunday 27th January. The second and third rounds will be held in Rotorua (2 February) and Palmerston North (10 February).
