Auckland Open Road Championships
Oct 08 2007

Jeremy Yates, the former Junior World Champion scored the most important win of his comeback season with victory in the Auckland Road Cycling Championships at Karaka on Sunday.

Yates has been steadily building his form over the winter and was far too strong for a good field of North Island riders on the same course which will host the national championships over Labour weekend.

Yates bided his time in the main bunch until near the end of the third of the six laps of the 156 kms race, when he bridged across to the breakaway bunch which included former national champion Gordon McCauley.

On the fifth lap Yates hit the front and although he was chased by Karl Murray who was second in the recent Tour of New Caledonia and North Harbour's Will Alexander, Yates won by a couple of minutes while the main bunch disintegrated in the increasing strong wind which blew up during the event.

Former promising junior Penny Pawson rode away from a small bunch of women in the final lap to take the women's title, while Junior U19 track star Myron Simpson who won silver in the omnium at the Jr World Champs was too cagey over the final kilometre launching a long sprint to take that title.

Earlier in the day, the U15 and U17 titles were decided by bunch sprints as the light breeze had little effect on breaking up the bunches.
