Mt Peel Mountainbike Marathon
6th April, 2008

Mt Peel is a tough 85km race that requires technical skills, portage and good endurance levels.

The Marathon course travels over 85 kilometers of undulating mountain terrain, covering 4WD and farm tracks. it includes a tough climb to over 5000 ft with fantastic views of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman. You cross several rivers (several times), and endure an awesome white knuckle continuous 25 minute downhill. Sadly :-) there is no longer a 20 minute carry through snow grass. You can now ride all the way.

It is a race that requires some technical skills and high levels of endurance, taking the fastest riders a good 4 hours 30 to 5 hours to complete.
The 2007 race had absolutely perfect weather, sunny and light winds.

The 2006 Race was cancelled due to bad weather (snow!!) and most riders joined the Blue Mountain Gorges.

There is a trophy for the 1st person to the Top of Coal Hill (the highest point in the race) and in 2007, jon Richardson took out the honours in a time of 2 hours and 12 minutes.

At the finish line it was David Drake in a blistering 4 hours 33 minutes.

It is an awesome course. The weather and conditions can be a challenge up on top, but when it is clear the ride is the best in the country. The views are spectacular. Bikers just rave about this ride.

It Starts and finishes at the Peel Forest Hall, Geraldine, South Canterbury at 7.30 AM on the Sunday Morning, see you there.
