Around The World In 80 Days - New World Record

Postby Melissa_Theuriau on Mon 3/Jul/17 1:54pm

UPDATE:

Mark has done it!
By arriving back in Paris in the early hours of this morning NZT, he has smashed the record for Fastest Circumnavigation by Bicycle (Male). Setting a new time of 78 days, 14hrs & 40 mins.

Some of the the conditions laid down by the Guiness book of records are that he must cycle 18,000miles (29,000Kilometres) an pass through two antipodal points on the global, Wellington(New Zealand) and Madrid(Spain).

After leaving New Zealand just over a month ago, he has had to battle into tremendous head winds across the flat lands of Canada. Before the last leg through Spain and back to Paris.

So some mad bugger called Mark Beaumont has just set off to attempt Juiles Vernes challenge of circumnavigating the world in under 80 days (By bicycle)

I love a good cycling challenge, but the pace (400Kms/day) to complete this one, to me appears impossible. But it should make for an epic attempt.

Cheer him on when he passes through New Zealand http://www.artemisworldcycle.com/the-challenge/

Have you seen his documentary from when he cycled the world a few years back, it's worth watching.

He wrote a book about it as well which complements the movie.

I had not appreciated that ontop of the fact that he has to sustain and impossible pace, but travelling West to East his days are 15 minutes shorter.

Dave landed in New Zealand yesterday evening, currently heading into Queenstown.

Anyone along the West coast get out and show your support

There was a good photo in the AFR last week of him riding with the bloke who is riding round the world on a unicycle. The unicyclist has been going for a few years I think and is spending a bit more time sniffing the roses

I suppose I should look out for him tomorrow since he's passing within 200m of my doorstep :D The tracker is a bit wanky though (compared to the NZ brevet ones anyway).

Just when you thought you'd seen it all some nutter goes out to take things to a whole new level

Awessome effort - he made the ferry!
Took a shortcut though to Blenheim instead of planned route through Nelson so I didn't get to go and say hello.
Words probably can't describe what he's going through now, torture is the closest I can come up with! At least he gets a few hours rest.

Any north islanders going to rendezvous with him?

Where's the proposed route map?

Looks like he'll pass through the Waikato on Saturday morning... don't think I'll be able to get out to watch him go past. Bloody good effort today. Hope he's got one of those fancy suites on the ferry.

He dunnit, 78 days 14 hours

Thinking of having a go at a 'Mark Beaumont' ride, trying to ride one of his days e.g. up at 3:30am, on road by 4am, try and bag 300km+ by 9:30pm https://www.strava.com/routes/10216949
