Are These Worth $1200

Postby Klarkash-ton on Mon 6/Sep/10 11:34am

Down from 3500 to 1200, in the specialized sell off at avantiplus.

Only seen a couple of sets on bikes at club races (I think the LOOK pretty awful...) but anyone used them? Are they the bargain they seem to be?

Could be OK for $1200, know of a couple of guys who have had issues with them locally . . . . . . .

Did you mention that they're ugly. :) Also likely to be susceptable to side winds with the increased side area, could make rides on a windy day exciting for the wrong reasons.

yep, not fond of the visuals.

Very few reviews, but most state they are fast, side wind isn't a problem, but they are not light, which is obvious from the stated weight. But what else can you get for 1200? Is it better? I see Fulcrum 1's on t7 for 1100 or 1200 now and then. they would be about the same weight I think?

The Roval is apparently good for flat racing, and they are probably lighter than my stock Bontrager Race wheels?

the photo looks like a clincher, but they also came as tubulars, so double check before you buy.

Also, what would you be using them for? There may be better options for you, depending on the intended use etc...

I really rate Fulcrums.. I have Fulcrum 3s for mucking about on, and a really good wheel.

2 guys had them up here ... and they both found them heavy, and actually flex'd a heck of a lot ... and very prone to breaks. Both hated them and replaced after about 3 mths.

I had planned on racing with the KCC guys in their Tuesday night race series. Hopefully I can get out to some other races on the weekends now the boys rugby season has finished. Hadn't decided whether to use them for Taupo enduro, since though they will be lighter than my current wheels (which worked fine last year!) I think they are designed for flat fast rides. Possibly Magnum Graperide, which is pretty flat.

looked at second hand wheels, and not seen anything that cheap yet, I'm assuming anything a bit older is a risk on tardme., especially wheel wise.
the comment about flex is a worry as I'm still 85kg, and doubt I can lose much more than another 5kg.

I've had my eyes of Fulcrum zeros for ages, but can't afford them...

:withstupid: American classic 350s if you're light enough for 420s if you're not - both are lighter, easy to work, cheaper on and look good :)
Fulcrum 1s...nearly as good ;)
Token C30 - as above for AM wheels but not as light at 1660gms (but lovely wheels  )

Serious?

Klarkash-ton, there are often decent "race" wheels to be had second hand for around those dollars - all sorts, from Reynolds DV46s, Mavic Cosmic Carbon SLs or Ksyriums, Fulcrum 0s (Fulcrum 1s seem to go for around $800 on TM), among others. Don't even look at ACs.

I wouldn't touch them. Here is a review which is not particularly fond of them: http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... tar--31420

Also when quickstep were on specialized wheels they never touched these for road races, only cracked them out for TT on deep carbon rims. Also the are bricks

I'm pretty sure much nicer wheels could be had for that money.
