Anyone Had Any Experience With Ford Transit Vans?

Postby Tama on Thu 18/Jun/09 8:57am

Being stuck at home I start to entertain little pipe dreams - like having a good mission van for stropping around the country with bikes and toys. I realise that what I should really get is a Toyota Super Custom 4WD but as this is pipe dream and I'm not overly keen to committing large chunks of money to it I've been thinking about Ford Transits.

I like the Ford Transit for the following reasons:
a) They're stupidly cheap (I reckon I could land one for under 3k)
b) They're big enough to make setting up a bed etc. comfy rather than snug

However I'm guessing they're cheap for a reason so I was wondering what experiences people have had with them :)

Saw this thread title and was reminded of Vim Vigor and the Bad News Tour.....but I digress.

AFAIK they are reliable and no major issues (assume you are referring to the new type that are used as Camper Vans by Maui, etc.). I thought they were more expensive than that though. Get a manual transmission if you have an option.

Ive had a bit of experience with transit vans, mostly when traveling to and from soccer games when I was playing at high school, I was left on the side of the road with the broken down van quiet often. It was a slightly older model but the problem tended to be with one of the belts that was far too long and ran a huge number of things (fans, alternator etc) as soon as this went you were fooked.

We've used them at work for the last 8 years.

They're comfy and good to drive, but it seems that they are prone to burning out clutches. May not be a problem with the newer ones though.

They dont tow well, but seem to be reasonably reliable from the couriers I know who have them.
Not quite as nice as the Merc Vans but far cheaper and they def do the job.

Doesnt Vanman have one now??? I think he has had one for a while, either a Transit or something similar.
