Postby Conners on Sun 3/Mar/13 2:52pm

I've had a couple now, they give me this popup:

And then when I have a looksee at what is trying to download/run:
WTF2.jpg

Not that keen on rinning exe's from such a trustworthy looking source :ib:

Anyone else seen this? This time it was from the Karapoti Woolshed Road thread, from memory the last one was from the Charming, Just Charming thread...

you need to run malwarebytes on your computer, But run ccleaner before hand.

Edit: and run firefox or chrome, not internet explorer.

Hey, you must like the same kind of porn as me!

I have had the same popup a couple of times, (also on NZ Herald?) so looks like I'm hijacked.
On IE ver 8 (don't ask) and Chrome, both fully patched.
(Don't worry about the kids LOLing about IE. They have no clue how long it would take to find out whether a phone-supported user was running Chrome etc, or Windows for that matter).

Process Explorer shows IE started from a no-longer existingTask Scheduler task, so presumably that's where the badness comes from and it no longer has anything to do with the website being browsed.

Rootkit Revealer took forever but didn't find anything obvious.

IE has been hacked so it reports a syntax error if I try to put .it.cx or .cx into the Restricted zone, so start as always by raising the security level on the Internet Zone to High.

+1 on CCleaner then MalwareBytes, that's what I use. CCleaner gets rid of the internet cache which speeds up scanning. MalwareBytes is slow but it gets rid of some nasties that others can't touch.
I'm running MS's own antivirus since this is a slow and low-risk machine, it has not noticed a problem. :p [edit] Actually it was just quarantining it silently. It was one of the Wimad family.

+1 on use firefox or chrome, basically.

IE I use only when it's on 'pooters where I don't have privilges to install an actual/sort of secure browser. You may wanna install peerblock and get the http://bluetack.co.uk/ spyware lists too. Blocks the shit out of people trying to do nasties to your machine.

I clean malware off the work computers ALL THE FUCKING TIME wherever I go, whereas AVG almost never picks up anything on my home one (aside from dodgy stuff like keygen programs, well... I presume it would pick those up, because of course I have never used one  )

As a hobby i do tech support and repairs for friends. Worst computer I saw had over 5000 infections detected by malwarebytes. That computer was owned my a workmates sister. The workmates computer by comparison was clean with only a few hundred infections, thing is he admitted to spending many hours on porn sites, she said she has never been near them, I offered a tui ad.

Install peerblock and a basic spyware/malware list, visit a dodgy site, and watch how many f-ing ip addresses the thing blocks - it's frightening  (but reassuring)

I tried blocking ad sites in the hosts file but found some sites hang for a while because they insist on loading their ads before the rest of the page.

Anyway the bug was Wimad, and MS's own (generally not very sensitive) antivirus just quietly quarrantined it.

Googling "site:.cx" shows that there is nothing lost by adding .cx to the Restricted zone in IE. I just blocked it at the router. It is Christmas Island.

and you believe the number/reports from malwarebytes

as for the 'you must be surfing porn sites to get malware' - not true, most common infection method now is via compromised legit sites, no-one is safe (so best to run both a decent antivirus/anitmalware package AND a decently secure browser)
