Any Outboard Mechanics Out There In Vorbville?

Specifically Mercury. Have an issue and would like some advice before I take it back to the shop.

Cheers

Yeh, small big block (2.6l). Into the lake on Sat am, putted out through the 5knot area, bit of a burst to clear the plugs. Hopped in ready for a ski, 3 turns then the boat's slowing and Mrs Captain turns back to me. "It's making a beeping (continuous) noise". Out of the water, start to check things out. Temp gauge is pretty high. Start motor, no sound, up on the plane, temp gauge rises, beeping starts. Stop, wait. Start, idle, temp high, but not rising, so slowly back to the ramp & trailer. Drop family off at the lakes edge, then take boat to local mechanic to check impellor. Turns out it's fine, so the problem is further up the engine. Only 69hrs on the clock and hasn't ever been dry run and hasn't been in the sea for a couple of years. Biggest pisser is that the lake was flat all day :(

Yeah, the mechanic said that there is a bypass valve near the block that switches from the impellor (low speed cooling) to the pressure feed (high speed cooling) and if something has phoozed out with that then that won't allow the transfer between the two circuits, which pretty much is what was happening on the lake. Just trying to sort out all possibilities before going in and having a "discussion" with the dealer.
