Aluminium Frame Welder... Christchurch???

Postby swtchbckr on Wed 19/Aug/09 9:16am

Friend of mine has cracked his Cove Stiffee... down near the drop out.

He's looking at getting Gordon from Welding Maintenance in Welles St to do the repair, but i've heard there's someone better (tidier, better at dealing with alum alloys)... Gordon's good, but can be a bit gungho, so i've been told...

Anyone tell me who's possibly better???

I've heard people that have gone out to Air New Zealand Engineering to have stuff done as well.
Could be a possibility as they do all the heat threating etc.

It will have to be heat treated or it will crack again.

Thorpe Engineering did a great job for us. Just off Blenheim Road?

I got a frame welded at Air NZ five or so years back. They did a very tidy job and heat treated it too.

:) I had a derailleur hanger block welded on by an aluminium welder here.
He left it for me to shape up. It worked out well and only cost me about $10 - but hardly a very stressed area.

I've heard Air NZ specialists do very good work too...but knowing who to approach about doing outside (normal airplane) work is another story...

I would make the effort to get in touch with Air NZ Engineering in CHCH - I had an Aluminium motorcycle frame touched up in terms a slightly dodgy weld and then braced in a couple of areas for added stiffness and the job is of such good quality - people can't even tell it's been re-done unless the weld is pointed out and even then it's very hard (one weld line has a slightly different coloured bead).
I'm not sure of who you would contact as my motorcycle was done through a motorcycle engineering / tuning company in Auckland who already had the contacts in place. They can do X-raying and heat treating as well, so they're a one stop shop really for alloy. The price was very, very good too - can't recall the exact figure. I'd just go for their main contact number in the phone book or ring Air NZ in CHCH and ask about their engineering department.

Thanks guys. You've probably guessed from my username it's my bike that's busted :). I think the AirNZ option seems best if they're willing to do it. I guess if you can't trust aircraft engineers to do a good job then no-one can! Will I have to have all the paint stripped off the frame or just the area close to the break? I ask because I only had the damn thing powder-coated about a month ago!

While you may not need to remove all the paint/powder coat for the actual welding - I would suggest that the heat treatment process would not be much good for the paint/powdercoat anyway...

Not too sure whether Air NZ Engineering would do this.. I've just used a company in Christchurch for some Heat Traetment work for work and their details are below. Just another option for you.

Quality Heat Traetment Ltd. Based in Sockburn. Tel: 03 348 4140 or Email chch@ssm.co.nz

Hope this helps.
