Now look here: building-night-lights-t55312-855.html?hilit=diy%20lighting#p2126396

Actually the quality of DX lights has improved since then. Two issues only remain IMO:
1) current sensing resistor (I just put a bigger one in for about $0.10 and
2) waterproofing. I wrap the battery pack in glad wrap and this is sorted.

I redo the heatsink goo as well, but it would be OK for ages anyway (way better than halogen or HID anyway). For the price WTH?

The old adage you get what you pay for rings true. I've had my nighlighting iblassts for a couple of years using them at least 3 times a week for most of the year and they're been nothing but brilliant.

Not cheap but imho worth every cent. Ive had more use per $ than any other bike component Ive owned.

Not as glad as the retailers to whom you paid your money.

retailers? NL sell direct (well there is the very odd shop that has there stuff). No hype, minimal marketting costs (sell on reputation) - all good

I think eric is exploring the whole 'can you have too much light' thing - maybe it'll be popular with MX riders? then again, remember when everyone insisted 700 lumens was 'way too much' and somehow went against the spirit of nightriding? :D

the first time you get stranded in the middle of nowhere with no light you realise that 'cheap' lights just ain't worth it (couple of experiences of that with my old topeak moonshine was enough to make me realise the long walk/stumble down the hill just ain't worth saving a couple of hundred bucks)

And with only one seller there isn't any issues with price fixing. :)

:withstupid: I have the quadblast and I concur, cheap for me too - I use my li-ion power tool batteries.

Looks like spam to me. He doesn't appear to be in a hurry to:
1) Quantify what the 'upgrade' over the DX sourced lights is (Russ's experience appears to be that this is zero) and

2) What the upgrade over the Lupine Tesla is.

Looks like sales talk/BS to me. Isn't this the guy who got a warning from the Commerce Commission for attempted price fixing?

yeah it is, although he denies it saying it was an ernie travers no relation to him  and yet he also said in the same sentence, this person will no longer be selling these lights on trade me. He had them at $149 and tried to negotiate with the DX importer to price fix them up at $189 which is still undercutting his retailers!!

It's just dodgy all round

Anyone had experience with/seen/used/have an opinion on one of these ?

I already have access to batteries and have a charger so figure it could be a good cheap system for me to use at the Bottle puddle night races. Thoughts ? :)

GO to Repco and buy the lights yourself. They are about $80 for 2. They work OK. I made a couple up last year for myself and a friend but upgraded to a Quadblast. My mate is still running his. With a 50watt bulb, they run about 1.5 hours on a 6ah battery. Most hardware stores sell a range of bulbs with various ratings so it is worth exprimenting. They come with a 50 watt bulb but I think my mate uses a 35watt one in there now.
They are a good entry light for night riding and definitely capable, but nowhere near as good as a LED unit.

Agreed.

Or better still get the one with the helmet mount included for free: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.29489

Just emailed eric and I can upgrade my iblaast I's to quad Cree XLG's. 1600 lumens ftw!

yep - lets see ANY other manufacturer who's keen to upgrade 'old' products. And not only that - he charges amazingly little for the upgrades (basically parts cost - very little time component even though it's a fiddly job), that's what keeps the customers coming back and people like you and me raving about how they're worth EVERY cent

hmmm - wonder what he can do to the old endurenz/blaast - heading towards night trail running season and having even more light to chase the possums in vic park could be cool

Znomit - he's probably got a good defense: 'I lifted the wrong photo from mtbr.com - could have happened to anyone'...

Notice he still hasn't answered the questions about how his lights are an upgrade on the Lupine Tesla and are better than the DX sourced lights.

Looks like time for another dose of CommComm
