:D

On the subject of the film industry. It's arguable that the motivational urges for some to work on a film, is very similar to those who volunteer for an event such as olympics, RWC etc. These volunteers get a t-shirt for payment, but they take away a feeling of contributing to a project close to their heart. Much like the guys who seek to work in the film industry on certain projects.

No one is forcing them to work in the film industry. Just like no one forces me to volunteer my time in sport.

...it's not as if any LOTR workers are bitching and moaning about their place in history.

The whingers can go work in a factory somewhere in china or taiwan. Soon put things into perspective.

Hobbit budget $500 million, Fonterra revenue $8,000 million p.a., NZ GDP $186,000 million p.a. Personally I'd rather see New Zealand focussing on real industrial development. The Hobbit is a big potential one off but I can't see New Zealanders ever being more than the contractors who work for the lowest wages, I'd rather make other expensive stuff and pay to go and see the movie on my huge salary, better yet I'll burn a copy.

That's great if there are jobs to go to.

I think you are confusing "life" with "employment relationship" which your employer owns (subject to a number of legal restrictions)

this is among the more retarded things I have read lately.

I know what you're trying to say, and yes, some people (particularly extras) were glad just to have been part of the LOTR. Possibly same with some of the crew: I know a couple of people who did stuff or supplied stuff to the production. But lets be clear: THEY ALL GOT PAID. They got whatever the agreement was, they got the lovely craft service packed lunches, transport to and from the locations etc etc etc. Because even if they are casuals or part timers, they are working for a business, and they got paid by that business. If memory serves, the company took out RWT at the contractor rate, and it was up to them to file the rest of the gubbins. Most didnt, but some did.

And anyone above the level I am talking about was pretty much guaranteed to be a professional, and this is one engagement in a career.

Tourism is now about the same size earner as dairy strip-mining farming(both $8-9 bil) , as 1 in five (or 1 in 4) tourists cited LOTR as a reason for visiting you could argue the middle-earth "brand" is worth about $2-2.5bil per annum.

And expensive stuff is made in the same place as the cheap stuff these days, HTH(I'm a twerp)

Theres a lot of talented people down there in Wellywood who could become useful productive members of society if they would just stop chasing these silly fairytales.

ps, what do they all do in between movies?

I'm guessing all his talent will become independent contractors, with no rights to any benefits. Which means they'll have to spit it out into Steve Crowe's hand after they finish their scenes
