It's official. The Pig & Whistle Singlespeed Mountain Bike Championship in Rotorua, New Zealand will be the 2009 Rest of the World Singlespeed Champs.
UCI director of one-geared racing, Sweden’s Mikael Kalle Blomkvist, made the announcement at a packed press conference at the organization’s headquarters in Switzerland, early this morning. “We think the Kiwis have cracked it again,” said Blomkvist. “Their first national singlespeed championship in 2008 was a huge success and we felt it was time to recognize this.”
A delegation from the 2009 World Singlespeed Championships (of the USA) in Durango, Colorado then stormed the stage and the press conference ended in chaos. When contacted, the organizers of the New Zealand event said:
"We have no comment at this time - we've been too busy getting a new updated event poster onto the website and a revised advertisement onto page 92 of the new issue of New Zealand Mountain Biker, out now - except to say, what will those wild and crazy UCI guys come up with next!”
The Pig & Whistle Singlespeed Mountain Bike Championship will be run on Anzac Day, Saturday April 25.
