1x10 Speed Set Up Advice For A 2011 Trance X

Postby Demis on Mon 22/Aug/11 5:07pm

Hi,

I have recently got my hands on a 2011 Giant Trance X2 :)

It came with Shimano SLX gears shifters and XT derailleurs, 10x3speed setup. I want to ditch the 3 chain rings up front and just run a 10x1 speed setup.

I prefer the Sram shifters so I plan to change to a Sram setup.
My plan is to run:
- X9 10sp shifter
- X9 rear derailleurs, short cage?
- 11-36t cassette
- 34T guide ring
- E13 XCX tube mounted chain guide

My question is, what length derailleurs should I run? Can I run a short cage on this setup? I dont think this frame has a lot of chain growth from the suspension.
And, has anyone had any experience with the E13 XCX chain guide? Unfortunately this frame has the press fit BB and no iscg tabs so I am rather limited to chain guide options. I would have preferred the LG1+ but I can’t see any easy way of mounting it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick

your set-up looks fine, although I'm not sure if the short cage mech will handle a 36T cassette?

its a shame that Giant have a press fit BB and no ISCG tabs. Both E.13 and MRP make Chain guides that will fit the seatube

Short cage should be fine according to the Sram website.

Thanks guys!,

Yes it is a shame they have limited the options on this frame, I think they should provide the isc tabs on the Trance and the reign's as it seems like lots of people are wanting to run a 1x10 speed set up on these bikes. I have read mixed reviews on the e13 XCX chain guide, so im a bit worried that it wont work so well. I ran a LG1 on my prevous bike for 4 years with out any problems, whish I could run one on this bike.

I will let you know how I get on!

Well I got all the new parts a few weeks ago and fitted them :)

I like the Sram gears, they feel much more precise then the shimano ones.

After a few rides with the E13 XCX chain Guide I found that the chain kept dropping from the bottom of the front chain ring, it would go back on with one pedal stroke but was still annoying so I decided to ditch the XCX and look at other options.

As you know this frame does not allow for a Iscg or BB mounted chain guide so my options were limited.

I really wanted to run an E13 Trail guide, (similar to the Lg1+)

So after lots of careful measuring I decided that I should try and make a bracket that would clamp the BB shell and allow for a ISCG mounted Chain Guide.

After several hours of filing and drilling I made the bracket, it’s a bit rough around the edges but it works well.

There is only 5mm between the back of the chain guide and the swing arm for the rear suspension, so the bracket is approximately 3.5mm thick. Giving 1.5mm clearance.

I am yet to test this on the trail, but I see no reason why it won’t work well>

The bike weighs 29.1 pounds new with the standard spec and large frame, In its current setup It now weighs 27.3 pounds :)

Wow nice work
Got a pic of the adaptor without the cranks in the way?
Hope it doesn't do too much damage to your frame when you get lower pulley strike.

Thanks!

I only took the photos above sorry. It sits flush with the end of the bb shell with the press fit bearing and spacer protruding out from it

I auctually tidyed the bracket up a lot since thoes photos were taken, I wish I had access to a milling mechine,

I dont think the lower pully will get hit much, it is out of the way.

I will let you know how it works on the trail :)

So can I, but some how I dont think a file would be the best tool to use for mass production :P

the bracket is 10mm wide where it sits on the BB shell and clamps very well with the clamp bolt only done up a small amount.

Cant wait to try it on the trails, hopefully no more chain droping for me!

Pivot Cycles make an adapter for exactly this set-up - BB92 frames with no ISCG tabs

Clever stuff, def a market for this sort of thing.

@PBR: aren't the Pivot adapters made specifically to fit their bikes (ala Mojo HD which uses a stay pivot as a fixing point)? Would be cool if someone made a generic adapter.

Unlike the HD adapter, there isn't a bolting point on the frame, yes there is a couple of tabs that lock into the frame for extra security, but otherwise it looks very similar to the OP's home made guide adapter plate

that looks way flasher than mine, although I dont think it would work on the Trance. It looks like the swing arm would hit the wide bit at the bottom, that why I made mine so the thick bit came through the middle of the guide.

Do you know how much that one costs?
